About Us

Our team prepares and competes in intercollegiate mock trial tournaments by simulating real courtroom trials, with students serving as attorneys and witnesses. Members develop skills in public speaking, critical thinking, legal reasoning, and teamwork while engaging with realistic case materials judged by legal professionals. Open to students of all majors, HCU Mock Trial provides valuable experience for anyone interested in law, advocacy, or persuasive communication.

Membership

The team is always looking for any members who wish to develop their rhetoric and public speaking skills, train vital skills necessary for law school and other professional areas of life, and have a fun time doing it!

Questions about Mock Trial

Mock Trial is a competition in which students simulate a real trial. The trial concerns an official AMTA case that remains the same through the entire academic year. The case alternates between a civil and a criminal case every year. The case is entirely fictional, taking place in the fictional state of Midlands. Teams consist of six to ten members, but only six compete at any given time 鈥� 3 attorneys and 3 witnesses. These six people will go against six other people from a different university. Teams must prepare both sides of the case (prosecution/plaintiff and defense) for every competition.

HCU Mock Trial is a student organization that teaches the basics of trial courts. Students can participate as either witnesses or lawyers. Participants learn to prepare and deliver opening and closing statements, direct cross examinations and learn how to argue objections. Students are coached by HCU faculty members and local attorneys.

HCU teams typically attend tournaments across the country in the fall and spring.

All HCU team members can receive credit hours for enrolling in the Forensics Worship course.

The Mock Trial team meets twice a week for two-and-a-half hours in each session. In addition, students must practice outside of class, attend scheduled weekend scrimmages and attend tournaments.

The University provides a budget for the program, covering transportation, meals, lodging and fees.

Mock Trial is open to students of all majors.
